“What Is The Meaning Of Life?”
That is such a huge question!
I came across it reading about symbols. I love relating to symbols. Finding answers to burning questions with inner symbology feels like seeing something invisible. When an “aha” moment comes by way of the metaphor a symbol brings, the day takes on another dimension.
But the meaning of Life? That’s a big one.
E.F. Edinger’s book about Archetypes suggests the question has to be narrowed down. And he gives an example saying it could be answered more easily by asking specifically:
“What is the meaning of my life?”
For me, it still seems like too big of a question. The point about specifics however, is true. Especially when looking for answers through your own inner symbols.
Maybe you can relate to something similar to the list of smaller questions from the list below?
What to name the new character in my novel?
When is the soonest I can move to Hawaii?
How do I stop the self sabotage?
Why am I so anxious?
What does the pandemic mean for me?
Why am I creating these paintings?
There are two kinds of symbol meanings. The Universal meaning and the Subjective meaning.
Universal – What everyone thinks it stands for. It’s a collective agreement that has been accepted over a long time by a large group of people over large varieties of culture and society. An example is the Moon.
Subjective – Which is the meaning to you specifically. It’s personal. It’s brought on through life experience. It can also come from an unconscious opening to a hidden personal perspective.
If the meaning is personal, it then becomes a realization or revelation. And that’s where things get interesting because then the symbol is connected to your senses, which leads to emotion. And when emotions are involved, healing is there.
Instead of feeling overwhelmed by trying to figure out the meaning of life, a smaller step forward could be to start noticing personal symbols that represent certain smaller aspects in your life.
With just one or several symbols, you might find a small bit of meaning that brings greater knowing about your own life, specifically.
If you’re looking for answers to something that’s on your mind. Symbols are a safe and fun place to start.
